How to use the Raspberry Pi Imager to flash a Raspberry Pi

Instructions for Flashing an Image using Raspberry Pi Imager:

  1. Download Raspberry Pi Imager:

  2. Install Raspberry Pi Imager:

    • Follow the installation steps for your system.
    • Once installed, open the Raspberry Pi Imager.
  3. Insert your Storage Device:

    • Insert your SD card, USB drive, or eMMC module (via a USB adapter) into your computer.
  4. Select the OS Image:

    • In Raspberry Pi Imager, click on the “Choose OS” button.
    • Select the appropriate OS image:
      • For official Raspberry Pi OS options, choose from the list.
      • To flash a custom image (for example, for a Le Potato), scroll to the bottom of the list and select “Use Custom” and browse to your image file (.img file).
  5. Choose the Storage Device:

    • Click on the “Choose Storage” button.
    • Select the storage device (SD card, USB drive, or eMMC) you inserted earlier.
  6. Advanced Options (Optional):

    • Press Ctrl + Shift + X to open the advanced options menu (this step is optional and only works for the official Raspbery Pi images).
    • In this menu, you can:
      • Set hostname.
      • Enable SSH.
      • Configure Wi-Fi.
      • Set locale settings.
  7. Write the Image:

    • Click on the “Write” button to begin flashing the image to your storage device.
    • Wait for the process to complete. It may take a few minutes, depending on the image size and your storage speed.
  8. Verify the Flashing Process:

    • After writing, Raspberry Pi Imager will verify the process.
    • Once complete, you will see a confirmation message.
  9. Eject the Storage Device:

    • Safely eject your SD card, USB drive, or eMMC module.
  10. Boot the Device:

    • Insert the storage device into your Raspberry Pi, Le Potato, or other single-board computer.
    • Power it on, and it should boot from the newly flashed image.
