Day 32 – July 14, 2015

Day 32

Reflect upon a transition you have made to the internship setting, which one of your previously held value or ethical constructs in being challenged? Are you taking the internship experience and context as reflected in local values and ethics into consideration? In what way and how?  [EVES]

A previously held value that has been challenged in the internship setting is the value of delegation. As mentioned in habit 3 of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, proper delegation can be the outcome of significant success. I learned that in the community partner setting, I am given parameters for a project and am instructed/ required to accomplish certain goals with minimal supervision. This has given me the insight into the value of collaboration and delegating tasks. Previously, I thought that delegating tasks meant I had to explain and walk others through tasks. Now I understand that when delegating, even if I think I can do it more efficiently myself, I can have two effects. The first effect is getting a production of one unit; this occurs when I explain in detail what needs to be done and how to complete it. The second effect would be being able to produce 10, 100, or more units. This happens when a manager delegates projects providing guidelines and parameters while giving the worker the opportunity to cognitively make decisions on the details for how to accomplish the tasks.

I learned this when I began delegating projects to data teams in the organization. i.e. the third week of the internship.

This learning matters because In the early stages of my career it is important to have personal and professional growth. I consider this as professional growth.

In light of this learning, the value I get from this internship is phenomenal.  I have gathered a better understanding of the type of work that I like to do.  Being a facilitator for social gatherings seems to be something that is of great interest to me.
