Day 20 – June 26, 2015

Day 20

In what ways have I experienced joy, surprise, and enchantment in various situations when I have been disturbed? Might a conversation with your DFE site supervisor be valuable? Why or why not? [EVES]

I learned that I really enjoy the work I am doing. In my time so far at The Helm Society (4 weeks), I have experienced both Joy and disappointment. When I initially started working for Helm, I believed I would be working with a large group of people. To my surprise, I am working with various individuals but not a large group. In my role at the Helm Society, I am recruiting the future of the helm society. At this point in the internship, my role as an intern is shifting from being a hiring manager to be in management of the organization. I am recruiting less than I was in the last two weeks and I am focusing on building a process. Added to this process, I am also managing projects and delegating tasks as if I was the CEO. My Boss, Josh Klenoff (CEO), Delegates a project or task to me and then I assign the appropriate tasks to the appropriate teams. With all this said, I achieve the most joy when I see a project completed successfully.  I have also experienced disappointment and at the same time slight ire toward myself when tasks go awry or are not completed well.

I learned this when I am in the office and debrief and evaluate progress with Josh. On a very frequent basis my boss pulls me aside for a moment and he complements me and praises the impact my work has had on the organization.

This learning matters because success is important for personal growth and for the organization. In professional work, one grows most through success because one is elated when he or she completes a task. This gives the person more confidence in his or her work.

In light of this learning, I would not be in the position I am in the organization if it were not for the training, and the education that the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good program has provided me. The exposure that the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good Program has given me in the field of uncertainty and ambiguity is paying off. I say this because I am dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity on a consistent basis in my position. Additionally, I am creating a huge impact on the organization. In Josh’s own words, “You have created a huge impact in recruiting … (you are) adding true value to the company.” Another distinguish I have gotten is in communication. Josh has told me that I am discrete when it comes to communicating. To preface, josh is consistently on the phone with other CEO’s. Josh has told me that when he is on the phone I have added value to his progress through being able to communicate with him when he is occupied; often this is when I need something urgent and he is on the phone I am able to get his attention without interrupting his conversation.
