Day 12 – June 16, 2015

Day 12

Have I seen how others in the organization where I am interning use verbal language, oral presentations techniques, and visual communications tools (website, etc) to create desire for the exchange of goods and services in the marketplace? If so, how effective do I see these forms of communication? Where are my own opportunities to strengthen skills and abilities? Might a conversation with your DFE site supervisor be valuable? Why or why not? [AC]

Please apply the Reflective Discernment Model to articulate your learning: I learned that, I learned that when, This learning matters because, In light of this learning.

I learned that the use of oral presentation is very important when it comes to debriefing. As an intern, I debrief once a day at the start of the day. My coworkers each have a schedule whether daily, weekly, or twice a week when they debrief. Verbal language is important not only during a debrief but also in my communication with the people I work with. I need to be able to present my case as fluid and quickly as possible to make the best use of my time. A debrief would follow this procedure: Results of previous day, what were Bottlenecks (roadblocks), what can we do better, goals for the current day. Being able to present and make my case is important. Some of the visual communication tools I use are as simple as screenshots and as complex as searching through a portfolio to find what my boss calls “a delicious” design. The communication inside the office is very sporadic while also maintaining a scheduled order. Ironically, even inside the office, one would get a faster response through email than through asking in person; this is because everyone is on his or her own schedule and focused on his or her own task. Asking in person causes the possibility of someone forgetting while emailing a request acts as a reminder. This method of communication strengthens my opportunity to excel at communicating effectively inside the work place.

I learned this method of communication immediately within the first week of my internship. Even now as my internship is proceeding, I am still learning the communication habits used both inside the work place and through online communications.

This learning matters because, while your voice may be important, using visual communications tools such as a presentation, screenshots, ect. Helps bring your point across quicker and more fluidly than mere words could. While oral communication tools are important, making complex simple is just as important. According to the article 5 Habits of Highly Effective Communicators by forbes.com, when you make the complex more simpler the listener will grasp it easier as well.

In light of this learning, the communication that happens inside the office is just as important as the communication that happens in the market for the service that we are providing to the CEO community. In my experience within the organization so far, CEO’s of all these other companies we are working with, ranging from IT to Health to Machinery, use similar methods of communication in the sense of email communication.
