Day 11 – June 15, 2015

Day 11

Can I see how I contribute to the small work group (planning and decision-making) within my internship assignment? Do I recognize how the organization acquires its funds (revenue) through exchanges of goods or services with others? Might a conversation with your DFE site supervisor be valuable? Why or why not?

I learned that in my internship assignment I contribute value through decision-making. I contribute value because my current assignment is a recruiting manager; this position allows me to add value through the candidates I choose to be potential employees. My role is important because as my boss mentioned we are a startup not a business and we are at a point where the startup needs to grow. The difference is that a startup is a hypothesis that there is potential in the market for a business in this type of work. I recognize that the organization acquires its revenue through the subscription service it provides to business owners and CEO’s. To preface the structure, Last year the organization only charged members for events they attended. Now, members pay monthly fees in the form of a subscription. The reason for this change is that the previous business model was causing them to lose money; now they make a steady increasing revenue.

I learned this when I started my role as a recruiting manager for the organization.

This learning matters because, the difference between a startup and business is important to comprehend. Prior to Friday June 12, 2015 I was oblivious of the difference and understanding this difference makes me more knowledgeable about the startup. This learning is important for when I communicate with the CEO’s in the Helm Society’s community. Additionally, understanding the business model used in the organization is important because it allows me to understand the perspective in which my boss operates.

In light of this learning, my comprehension of the business model for a startup and revenue stream has increased. I now understand that certain business models are specific to different business types.
